Summary

This study identified 11 abnormal hemoglobin (Hb) variants in Hunan Province, China, with an average incidence of 0.486%. Certain ethnic groups and geographic locations showed higher incidences, highlighting the need for targeted screening.

Area of Science:

  • Hematology
  • Biochemistry
  • Genetics

Background:

  • Abnormal hemoglobins (Hbs) are genetic conditions affecting oxygen transport.
  • Hunan Province has a diverse population with potential for unique Hb variants.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To summarize findings on abnormal hemoglobins in Hunan Province.
  • To analyze the structure, frequency, and functional characteristics of identified Hb variants.

Main Methods:

  • Literature review of Hb journals and hematology articles (1980-1991).
  • Primary structure analysis of Hb variants.
  • Functional studies including oxygen equilibrium, globin synthesis rates, morphology, and DNA analysis.

Main Results:

  • Identified 11 Hb variants in 36 individuals out of 7412 screened.
  • Average incidence of abnormal Hbs in Hunan is 0.486%, with higher rates in Jianghua County (Yao ethnic group).
  • Reported two new variants (Hb Jianghua, Hb Shuangfeng) and three variants new to China (Hb Lille, HbA(2) Flatbush, Hb Lepore-Boston).

Conclusions:

  • Abnormal hemoglobin prevalence varies geographically and ethnically in Hunan.
  • Hb Shuangfeng (SF) exhibits altered oxygen affinity and can lead to hemolytic anemia under certain drug exposures.
  • DNA analysis confirmed genotypes for specific hemoglobinopathies.
