Summary

Ceramic inlays offer superior interfacial integrity in Class II restorations compared to direct resin composites, preventing enamel gaps. Flowable resin liners improve resin-dentin bonding but do not prevent enamel gaps with either restoration type.

Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare the interfacial integrity of Class II ceramic inlay restorations versus direct resin composite restorations.
  • To evaluate the influence of a flowable resin composite liner on interfacial integrity.

Main Methods:

  • Class II DO cavities in mandibular molars were restored with either direct composite, ceramic inlays, or with a flowable resin liner prior to restoration.
  • Samples underwent thermocycling and were cross-sectioned.

    • Ceramic inlay restorations provide superior marginal integrity at the enamel interface for Class II cavities.
    • Flowable resin composite liners enhance resin-dentin bonding but do not mitigate enamel gap formation.
    • Clinical recommendations should consider the material's impact on long-term restoration success and marginal seal.
