  • To quantify the extent of physical crowding and personnel shortages in US hospital EDs.

  • A mail survey was distributed to a random sample of 250 US hospital EDs.
  • Data collection focused on patient and staff counts at a specific index time (7 PM, March 12, 2001).

  • A 36% response rate was achieved, indicating a low feasibility for this method.
  • Overcrowding was prevalent, with an average of 1.1 patients per treatment space and 52% of EDs exceeding this ratio.
