Background:

  • Mesothelioma, a rare neoplasm of mesothelial cells, can affect body cavities.
  • Diagnosis in horses is often challenging, typically relying on post-mortem examination.

Observation:

  • Two horses presented with clinical signs of respiratory distress, depression, and pleural pain.
  • Affected body cavities (pleural and pericardial) contained significant serous effusions.
  • Effusions revealed very large neoplastic mesothelial cells with characteristic cytological features.

Findings:

  • Neoplastic mesothelial cells exhibited densely-staining cytoplasm, hyperchromic nuclei, and prominent nucleoli.
  • Ultrastructural analysis showed solid aggregates of cells with abundant microvilli and neolumen formation.
  • Cytological findings were consistent with mesothelioma in both cases.

Implications:

  • Ante-mortem diagnosis of equine mesothelioma is feasible.
  • Cytological examination combined with ancillary tests like electron microscopy and immunocytochemistry aids diagnosis.
  • Early diagnosis can improve understanding and management of equine cancers.
