Several factors can increase the risk of cancer in an individual. About 50% of cancer cases can be prevented by adopting a healthy lifestyle, regular exercise, eating healthy, and following a modest cancer prevention diet. Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the association between dietary fat intake and breast cancer risk using both FFQs and detailed food diaries.
  • To assess the impact of dietary measurement error on the observed relationship between fat consumption and breast cancer incidence.

Main Methods:

  • A cohort of 13,070 women provided dietary data via FFQ and a 7-day food diary between 1993-1997.
  • 168 incident breast cancer cases diagnosed by 2000 were compared with four matched controls.
  • Dietary intake, particularly saturated fat, was analyzed for its association with breast cancer risk.

Main Results:

  • Saturated fat intake measured by the food diary showed a significant association with increased breast cancer risk (HR 1.22 per quintile increase, p=0.005).
  • Saturated fat intake assessed by FFQ did not show a statistically significant association with breast cancer risk (HR 1.10, p=0.23).
  • These findings suggest a potential link between saturated fat and breast cancer not detected by FFQs.

Conclusions:

  • Dietary measurement error, particularly from FFQs, may obscure the true relationship between dietary fat and breast cancer risk.

  • Re-evaluation of dietary assessment methods is crucial for understanding the role of fat intake in breast carcinogenesis.
