Neonatal plantar response revisited.

Background:

The plantar response is a common neurological reflex tested in neonates.
Understanding typical plantar responses is crucial for identifying neurological abnormalities.

Purpose of the Study:

To evaluate the characteristics of the plantar response in healthy, term newborns during the early neonatal period.

Main Methods:

A prospective study involving 256 healthy, term neonates.
The plantar response was elicited using the thumb-nail-drag method daily for the first 7 days of life.
Responses were categorized as extensor, flexor, or equivocal.

Main Results:

The plantar response was predominantly extensor (73.8%) in healthy term neonates.
Equivocal (17.3%) and flexor (8.9%) responses were also observed.
Asymmetrical responses occurred in 5.4% of observations, with no significant age or site differences.

Conclusions:

The plantar response in healthy term neonates is predominantly extensor.
The frequency of flexor and asymmetrical responses suggests limited clinical utility for early diagnosis in this population.
