Context:

  • Central nervous system cavernous hemangiomas (CNS CHs) are vascular malformations.
  • Understanding their histological and molecular characteristics is crucial for diagnosis and treatment.

Purpose:

  • To investigate the histological structure, angiogenesis, and proliferative activity of CNS CHs.
  • To compare these features with normal brain vasculature.

Summary:

  • Immunohistochemical analysis of 70 CNS CH samples and 20 normal brain vessels revealed differences in CD34, alpha-smooth muscle actin (a-SMA), vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), Fms-like tyrosine kinase-1 (Flt-1), and transforming growth factor-alpha (TGF-a) expression.
  • CNS CHs exhibited less continuous CD34 and a-SMA staining, indicative of immature vessel walls, and increased expression of VEGF, Flt-1, and TGF-a compared to normal vessels.
