Summary

Phacoemulsification can cause capsular bag shrinkage. To prevent posterior capsule opacification and intraocular lens (IOL) decentration, maintaining the IOL in a non-capture position relative to the anterior capsule is recommended.

Area of Science:

  • Ophthalmology
  • Biomedical Engineering

Context:

  • Phacoemulsification with foldable intraocular lens (IOL) implantation is a common cataract surgery technique.
  • Understanding post-operative changes in the lens capsule is crucial for optimizing surgical outcomes.

Purpose:

  • To investigate lens capsule alterations following phacoemulsification.
  • To assess the impact of these changes on intraocular lens (IOL) position.
  • To determine the optimal IOL placement relative to the anterior capsule.

Summary:

  • 141 eyes (127 patients) were studied post-phacoemulsification and IOL implantation.
  • Observed capsular bag shrinkage and Soemmering ring formation.
  • Three IOL positions relative to the anterior capsule were identified: non-capture, partial-capture, and total-capture.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Higher posterior capsule opacification (PCO) incidence in the total-capture group (47.6%).
  • Better IOL centering in non-capture (91.2%) and total-capture (81.0%) groups compared to partial-capture (42.3%).
  • Impact:

    • Findings suggest that avoiding IOL capture by the anterior capsule minimizes PCO.
    • Non-capture IOL positioning is associated with improved IOL centration.
    • This research provides insights for surgical techniques to enhance long-term visual outcomes after cataract surgery.
