Summary

Photorefractive keratectomy (PRK) and laser in situ keratomileusis (LASIK) are effective for myopia up to -6 diopters. Both refractive surgery methods show comparable and stable results 3-6 months post-operation.

  • Photorefractive keratectomy (PRK) and laser in situ keratomileusis (LASIK) are leading surgical techniques.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare the clinical outcomes and stability of PRK and LASIK for myopia up to -6 diopters.
  • To evaluate the long-term efficacy of these refractive surgery procedures.

Main Methods:

  • A retrospective study of 542 eyes (452 PRK, 90 LASIK) with myopia up to -6 D.
  • Refraction, uncorrected visual acuity (UCVA), and best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) were assessed pre-operatively and at 1 week, 1, 3, 6, and 12 months post-operatively.

  • Standard ophthalmic examinations were performed.
  • Main Results:

    • One year post-PRK: mean spherical refraction -0.35 ± 0.71 D, mean astigmatism -0.63 ± 0.38 D, UCVA 0.90 ± 0.19, BCVA 0.98 ± 0.11.
    • One year post-LASIK: mean spherical refraction -0.10 ± 0.81 D, mean astigmatism -1.05 ± 0.65 D, UCVA 0.80 ± 0.24, BCVA 0.86 ± 0.21.
    • Both PRK and LASIK demonstrated stable results over time.

    Conclusions:

    • PRK and LASIK are safe and effective for correcting myopia up to -6 D.
    • Clinical outcomes are comparable to other centers and stable across years.
    • Both refractive surgery techniques achieve similar postoperative results within 3 to 6 months.
