Area of Science:

  • Otolaryngology
  • Surgical Complications
  • Airway Management

Background:

  • Tracheostomy is a common procedure to relieve upper airway obstruction.
  • While generally safe, it carries potential risks and complications.
  • Hemorrhage is a known, albeit infrequent, complication.

Observation:

  • This case series details patients experiencing severe post-tracheostomy bleeding.
  • Bleeding led to torrential hemorrhage and sudden airway compromise due to clot formation.
  • The presentation of airway obstruction by clot can be diagnostically challenging.

Findings:

  • Post-tracheostomy bleeding can result in life-threatening hemorrhage.
  • Clot formation in the airway presents as sudden obstruction, mimicking other conditions.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Delayed recognition of clot-induced airway obstruction can be fatal.
  • Implications:

    • Highlights the critical need for prompt diagnosis of airway obstruction post-tracheostomy.
    • Emphasizes vigilance for rare but severe complications of tracheostomy.
    • Informs clinical practice for managing airway emergencies after tracheostomy procedures.
