Summary

Tonsillectomy in childhood did not increase respiratory infections long-term. However, this study found a significantly higher risk of developing chronic diseases in adults who had tonsillectomy as children.

Background:

  • Tonsillectomy is a common pediatric surgery with limited long-term follow-up data.
  • Previous research has not extensively investigated the long-term health consequences of childhood tonsillectomy.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the long-term effects of tonsillectomy on respiratory infections and chronic disease prevalence.
  • To compare infection rates and chronic illness in adults who underwent tonsillectomy in childhood versus a control group.

Main Methods:

  • A cohort study followed 18 individuals tonsillectomized approximately 20 years prior.
  • A comparison group of 54 age-matched, non-tonsillectomized individuals was selected.
  • Data on infection frequency, duration, and chronic disease prevalence were collected via questionnaire.

  • No significant difference in the frequency, duration, or severity of upper respiratory tract infections (URIs) was observed between groups.
  • Absence from work, physician visits, and antibiotic use were similar in both tonsillectomized and control groups.
  • A significantly higher prevalence of chronic disease was found in the tonsillectomy group (Relative Risk: 9.41).

Conclusions:

  • Childhood tonsillectomy does not appear to increase the long-term risk of respiratory infections.
  • A significantly elevated risk for developing chronic diseases later in life is associated with childhood tonsillectomy.
  • Further large-scale immunological and epidemiological studies are needed to validate these findings on long-term tonsillectomy effects.
