Area of Science:

  • Forensic Toxicology
  • Pharmacology
  • Analytical Chemistry

Background:

  • 5-methoxy-N,N-diisopropyltryptamine (Foxy) is a tryptamine compound with known hallucinogenic and euphoric effects.
  • Tryptamine derivatives are frequently encountered in recreational drug use and forensic investigations.
  • Understanding the metabolism and detection of novel psychoactive substances is crucial for clinical and legal contexts.

Observation:

  • A 21-year-old male presented with mild hallucinations and motor impairment after ingesting a pill suspected to contain Foxy.
  • Clinical observation lasted 2 hours, with urine collection occurring 4 hours post-ingestion.
  • The patient was discharged without further follow-up.

Findings:

  • Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) confirmed 5-methoxy-N,N-diisopropyltryptamine in urine at 1.7 µg/mL.
  • The metabolite 5-methoxy-indole acetic acid was identified and quantified at 1.3 µg/mL.
  • Tentative identification of 5-methoxy-N-isopropyltryptamine and 5-methoxy-N,N-diisopropyltryptamine-N'-oxide was also made.

Implications:

  • This study provides valuable data on the detection and metabolism of 5-methoxy-N,N-diisopropyltryptamine in human urine.
  • The findings aid in the forensic identification of Foxy and its metabolites.
  • Establishes analytical methods for identifying Foxy and related compounds in biological samples.
