Summary

Exercise significantly increases thrombin generation in patients with intermittent claudication (IC) compared to controls. This heightened thrombin production, despite similar fibrin turnover, suggests a prothrombotic state in IC patients.

Background:

  • Exercise-induced ischemia-reperfusion injury and systemic inflammation are known in intermittent claudication (IC).
  • The impact of exercise on coagulation in IC patients remains uncharacterized.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare exercise-induced thrombin generation and fibrin turnover in patients with IC.
  • To compare these effects in age- and sex-matched smokers and non-smokers without peripheral vascular disease.

Main Methods:

  • Blood samples were collected at multiple time points before and after treadmill exercise.
  • Assays included markers of thrombin generation (thrombin-antithrombin complexes [TAT], prothrombin fragments 1 + 2 [PF1 + 2]) and fibrin turnover (D-dimer, fibrin degradation products [FbDP]).
