Area of Science:

  • Psychiatry
  • Clinical Psychology
  • Behavioral Science

Background:

  • Kleptomania is characterized by an inability to resist the impulse to steal.
  • This condition often leads to significant functional impairments in individuals.
  • Previous research suggests a potential link between impulse control disorders and stress.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate perceived stress levels in individuals diagnosed with kleptomania.
  • To compare perceived stress in kleptomania versus major depressive disorder (MDD).
  • To examine the relationship between perceived stress and kleptomania symptom severity and treatment response.

Main Methods:

  • Sixteen subjects with DSM-IV kleptomania and 20 subjects with DSM-IV MDD were assessed.
  • The Perceived Stress Scale (PSS) was administered to all participants.
  • Correlational and comparative analyses were used to evaluate PSS scores, symptom severity, and treatment changes.

Main Results:

  • Individuals with kleptomania reported significantly higher baseline PSS scores than those with MDD.
  • PSS scores strongly correlated with the severity of kleptomania symptoms, even after controlling for comorbidities.
  • A significant decrease in PSS scores was observed during treatment for kleptomania.

Conclusions:

  • People with kleptomania exhibit elevated levels of perceived stress compared to individuals with MDD.
  • Perceived stress is a significant factor associated with kleptomania symptom severity.
  • Treatment interventions for kleptomania appear to effectively reduce perceived stress.
