Area of Science:

  • Lifestyle Medicine
  • Behavioral Science
  • Public Health

Background:

  • Sedentary lifestyles contribute to numerous health issues.
  • Achieving 150 minutes of moderate to vigorous physical activity (MVPA) weekly is recommended for health benefits.
  • Lifestyle physical activity interventions aim to increase daily movement.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine if adherence to a lifestyle physical activity intervention predicts achieving 150 minutes of weekly MVPA.
  • To analyze the association between adherence markers and physical activity levels in sedentary adults.

Main Methods:

  • Structural equation modeling was used to analyze data from 244 sedentary healthy adults.
  • Adherence markers included attendance, homework completion, and self-monitoring.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Interventions were delivered via group sessions or telephone/mail.
  • Main Results:

    • Adherence to the lifestyle physical activity intervention significantly predicted weekly MVPA in both intervention formats.
    • Higher adherence correlated with increased participation in moderate to vigorous physical activity.

    Conclusions:

    • Adherence is a critical factor in the success of lifestyle physical activity interventions.
    • Encouraging adherence can enhance the likelihood of participants meeting recommended physical activity guidelines.
    • Intervention strategies should focus on promoting and maintaining participant adherence for sustained health benefits.
