Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare different levels of JPEG compression with original bit-mapped retinal images.
  • To determine if JPEG compression leads to a loss of clinically relevant detail.
  • To assess the suitability of compressed images for diabetic retinopathy screening.

  • 330 retinal images from 66 eyes were analyzed.
  • Images were captured using a Sony DXC-950 P 3CCD camera and Canon CR6-45NMf fundus camera.

    • JPEG compression with ratios of 1:20 to 1:12 (file sizes 66-107 kb) is permissible for diabetic retinopathy screening.
    • Higher compression ratios may render images unsuitable for accurate grading.
    • Careful selection of compression levels is necessary to balance file size and diagnostic quality.
