African tick bite fever (ATBF) causes frequent, mild biological abnormalities, including elevated C-reactive protein (S-CRP) and lymphopenia. These changes are common in travelers with this emerging spotted fever group rickettsiosis.

  • African tick bite fever (ATBF) is an emerging spotted fever group (SFG) rickettsiosis.
  • It affects international travelers to rural sub-Saharan Africa.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate sequential changes in biological variables in ATBF patients.
  • To estimate the frequency of abnormalities in commonly measured biological markers.

Main Methods:

  • Studied hemoglobin, leukocyte count, lymphocyte count, platelet count, and serum levels of C-reactive protein (S-CRP), alanine aminotransferase (S-ALAT), and other markers.
  • Analyzed data from 108 patients within the first two weeks of illness before treatment.

    • Sequential biological changes in ATBF resemble those in other SFG rickettsioses.
