Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess UV transmission through various car glass types.
  • To quantify personal UV exposure for passengers in different car settings.
  • To provide data on UV radiation risks during car travel.

  • Measured UV transmission of car windscreens, side windows, and sunroofs.
  • Evaluated UV doses on adult and child dummies using spore film dosimeters (Viospor).
  • Tested exposure levels in seven German middle-class cars with different window types and in an open convertible.

  • Car windows transmitted UV wavelengths >335 nm; windscreens transmitted >380 nm.
  • UV exposure on arms was 3-4% of ambient with windows closed, increasing to 25-31% with windows open.
