Area of Science:

  • Neuroscience
  • Linguistics
  • Neurology

Background:

  • Frontal atrophy can lead to progressive speech disorders.
  • Understanding the link between articulation and language processing is crucial.

Observation:

  • A patient presented with progressive speech loss, culminating in muteness.
  • Clinical and neuropsychological exams revealed severe articulatory disorder and mild language deficits (agrammatism, spelling errors).

Findings:

  • Auditory-verbal short-term memory showed selective impairment of the articulatory rehearsal system.
  • Both overt and covert articulation appear to be impaired in this condition.

Implications:

  • Pure anarthria may represent a disorder of executive language functions.

  • Ineffective covert articulation could underlie language deficits such as agrammatism and spelling errors.
