Context:

Falls are a significant concern in elderly institutionalized populations.
Understanding fall-related factors and injuries is crucial for prevention strategies.

Purpose:

To investigate factors associated with falls, contributing conditions, and resulting injuries in elderly individuals.
To analyze the relationship between intrinsic and extrinsic factors and fall occurrences.

Summary:

A study of 181 institutionalized elderly subjects (average age 76.4) revealed that 35.4% experienced falls.
Females had a higher frequency of falls and more severe injuries (contusions, fractures) than males.
Extrinsic factors (66%) were more prevalent causes of falls than intrinsic factors (34%).
While not statistically significant, tranquilizer and hypnotic use showed a connection to increased falls.

Impact:

Findings highlight the higher fall risk and injury severity in elderly females.
Identifies key intrinsic and extrinsic factors contributing to falls in the elderly.
Informs targeted interventions to reduce fall incidence and injury in aged care settings.
