Area of Science:

  • Dermatopathology
  • Surgical Oncology
  • Medical Imaging

Background:

  • Chondroid syringoma is a rare benign skin appendage tumor.
  • Clinical presentation can mimic malignant soft tissue masses.
  • Accurate preoperative diagnosis is crucial for appropriate management.

Observation:

  • A 55-year-old male presented with a large (10 x 8 x 10 cm) clinically malignant shoulder mass.
  • Ultrasound indicated the soft tissue tumor did not invade the chest wall.
  • Excisional biopsy was performed for definitive diagnosis.

Findings:

  • Histopathological examination confirmed the mass as a benign chondroid syringoma.
  • The tumor's large size and location presented diagnostic challenges.
  • This case represents a rare instance of chondroid syringoma with specific clinical features.

Related Experiment Videos

Implications:

  • This case underscores the need for thorough diagnostic evaluation of large soft tissue tumors.
  • Understanding the varied presentations of chondroid syringoma is important for clinicians.
  • Appropriate surgical excision is curative for benign chondroid syringoma.
