Central nervous system involvement in children with sarcoma.

Summary

Central nervous system involvement (CNSI) affects 6.17% of pediatric sarcoma patients, often presenting with neurological symptoms. Current treatments show limited impact on survival, necessitating the development of more effective therapies for this rare complication.

Background:

Central nervous system involvement (CNSI) is a rare but serious complication in pediatric sarcoma patients.
Understanding the incidence, presentation, and outcomes of CNSI is crucial for improving patient care.

Purpose of the Study:

To summarize and analyze the experience of CNSI in children with sarcomas.
To evaluate the frequency, clinical presentation, and treatment outcomes of CNSI in a pediatric sarcoma cohort.

Main Methods:

Retrospective review of medical charts from 1990 to 2001.
Analysis of 19 pediatric sarcoma patients diagnosed with CNSI.
Inclusion of various sarcoma subtypes, including osteogenic sarcoma and Ewing sarcoma.
