Summary

Fine needle aspiration with ultrasonography guide (PAEAFT) is a highly accurate diagnostic tool for thyroid nodules. This study analyzed 139 PAEAFT cases, finding follicular neoplasms most common, predominantly in females.

Background:

Fine needle aspiration (PAAF) is crucial for thyroid nodule diagnosis.
Ultrasonography guidance enhances the sensitivity and specificity of PAAF.
PAEAFT offers improved diagnostic accuracy for thyroid lesions.

Purpose of the Study:

To evaluate the diagnostic efficacy of fine needle aspiration with ultrasonography guide (PAEAFT).
To analyze the cytologic diagnoses and patient demographics from PAEAFT procedures.
To assess the distribution of thyroid nodule types and prevalence in relation to sex and age.

Main Methods:

Retrospective analysis of 139 PAEAFT cases.
Cytologic material processed using conventional and thin smear techniques.

Staining with Hematoxylin and eosin (H&E), Diff-Quik, and Papanicolaou stains.

Analysis of cytologic diagnoses, nodule characteristics, patient sex, and age.

Main Results:

Follicular neoplasms were the most common diagnosis (57.57%), particularly low-grade.
Multinodular Goiter (21.58%) and Papillary Carcinoma (4.32%) were also significant findings.
The study population was predominantly female (93.52%).
Hürthle cell tumors and Hashimoto's thyroiditis were diagnosed in 2.87% of cases each.

Conclusions:

PAEAFT is a sensitive and specific method for diagnosing thyroid nodules.
The study highlights the high prevalence of follicular neoplasms and the female predominance in thyroid pathology.
The findings support the use of PAEAFT in the diagnostic algorithm for thyroid nodules.
