  • However, adoption has been limited by miniaturized systems and a steep learning curve.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the applicability and learning curve of transradial cardiac catheterization in the Saudi population.
  • To assess the procedure's feasibility for operators without prior experience.

Main Methods:

  • A study conducted at King Fahd Armed Forces Hospital, Jeddah, Saudi Arabia (June 2001-January 2003).
  • Involved 202 patients undergoing transradial catheterization using standard 5F and 6F catheters.
  • Patients were divided into two groups: the first 101 (group 1) and the subsequent 101 (group 2).

Main Results:

  • The overall success rate for transradial catheterization was 95% (191 out of 202 patients).
  • Group 2 demonstrated a significantly higher success rate (99% vs. 90%, p=0.013) and shorter mean diagnostic catheterization time (20 vs. 28 minutes, p=0.013) compared to group 1.
  • No vascular or ischemic complications were reported.

Conclusions:

  • Transradial cardiac catheterization is a safe and feasible approach for both diagnostic and interventional procedures.
  • Procedural success rates and efficiency improve with increasing operator experience.
