Summary

This study assessed the reliability of visual evoked potentials (VEP) in healthy adults. Results show excellent test-retest reliability for VEP parameters, establishing normal variability limits for clinical use.

Area of Science:

  • Neuroscience
  • Ophthalmology
  • Clinical Electrophysiology

Background:

  • Visual evoked potentials (VEP) are crucial for assessing visual pathway function.
  • Establishing reliable normative data is essential for accurate clinical interpretation of VEPs.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the test-retest reliability and normal variability of specific VEP parameters.
  • To establish upper normal variability limits for clinical application.

Main Methods:

  • Twenty healthy volunteers underwent pattern reversal VEP testing with 15' and 30' checks.
  • Recordings were repeated after 7 days to assess reliability.
  • Intraclass correlation coefficients and variability limits were calculated for latencies and amplitudes.

Related Experiment Videos

Main Results:

  • All tested VEP parameters demonstrated excellent or good reliability.
  • Intraclass correlation coefficients indicated high consistency between test and retest sessions.
  • Variability limits were computed for absolute latency and relative amplitude differences.

Conclusions:

  • Pattern reversal VEPs exhibit high test-retest reliability in healthy adults.
  • The established variability limits provide a reliable reference for clinical VEP assessments.
  • These findings support the use of VEPs for diagnosing and monitoring visual pathway disorders.
