Area of Science:

  • Pediatric Neurosurgery
  • Traumatic Brain Injury

Background:

  • Conservative management of pediatric epidural hematoma may not always be effective.
  • Acute epidural hematoma requires careful monitoring for neurological changes.

Observation:

  • An 8-year-old boy with acute epidural hematoma showed hematoma expansion and a new ossified layer on CT after 10 days of conservative treatment.
  • The patient developed symptoms of elevated intracranial pressure.

Findings:

  • Rapid ossification of an epidural hematoma within 10 days of head injury is a previously unreported phenomenon.
  • Surgical evacuation of the hematoma and removal of the ossified layer were performed successfully.

Implications:

  • This case suggests that rapid ossification can occur in pediatric epidural hematomas.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Early surgical intervention may be necessary in cases with rapid hematoma expansion and ossification.
  • Further research into the mechanisms of rapid ossification in epidural hematomas is warranted.
