Heavy cannabis smoking can cause a rare condition called cannabis-arteritis, leading to digital necrosis. Early diagnosis and treatment are crucial to prevent severe complications like digit loss in young smokers.
Area of Science:
- Vascular Medicine
- Toxicology
Background:
- Connective tissue disorders, arteriosclerosis, and arterial emboli were excluded in a young woman with Raynaud's phenomenon.
- The patient was a heavy cannabis smoker presenting with progressive digital necrosis.
Observation:
- Arteriography showed characteristic corkscrew-shaped vessels and multiple occlusions in the forearm, palm, and digits.
- These findings, combined with clinical presentation, led to the diagnosis of cannabis-arteritis.
Findings:
- Cannabis-arteritis was diagnosed based on clinical and arteriographic evidence.
- Successful treatment involved necrectomy, conservative wound care, and prostacyclin therapy, resulting in complete healing.
- No recurrence was observed during a 6-month follow-up period.
Implications:
- Cannabis use may be a cofactor in the development of arteritis, particularly in young individuals.
- Early recognition of cannabis-arteritis is vital to prevent irreversible complications, including loss of digits.
- This case highlights the potential vascular risks associated with heavy cannabis consumption.
