    • School nursing
    • Public health interventions
    • Adolescent healthcare

    Background:

    • School nurses play a vital role in student health.
    • Effective communication channels are crucial for accessing school nursing services.
    • Understanding the scope of school nursing practice is important for students.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the effectiveness of a piloted health care interview (HCI) conducted by school nurses.
    • To assess the impact of the HCI on student knowledge regarding school nurse roles and accessibility.
    • To identify health issues requiring intervention among secondary school entrants.

    Main Methods:

    • A pilot study was conducted in Bath health authority.
    • 99 pupils entering secondary school participated.
    • Participants had a prior health check with a school doctor at age ten.

    Main Results:

    • The HCI significantly improved pupils' knowledge of the school nurse's identity and contact methods.
    • The HCI did not significantly improve pupils' understanding of the school nurse's functions.
    • A total of 39 student health problems requiring action were identified during the interviews.

    Conclusions:

    • Health care interviews can enhance student awareness of school nurse availability.
    • Further strategies are needed to educate students on the comprehensive role of school nurses.
    • The HCI successfully identified actionable health concerns in a significant number of students.
