Background:

Monocortical plate systems are used in maxillofacial surgery.
Eccentric screw placement is a proposed technique for enhanced fracture fixation.

Purpose of the Study:

To quantify the displacement and compressive forces from eccentric screw placement in a simulated mandibular fracture model.
To evaluate the efficacy of eccentric screw placement in monocortical systems.

Main Methods:

An experimental model using five miniplates and Perspex blocks was employed.
Eccentric screw placement was utilized to simulate mandibular fractures.

Main Results:

Maximum displacement achieved was 0.67 mm.

Maximum compressive force recorded was 5.2N (SEM=0.9, range=2.7-7.1).

Forces were comparable to theoretical predictions based on device dimensions.

Conclusions:

Eccentric screw placement in monocortical systems can generate measurable compression and displacement at fracture sites.
The forces produced are predictable and may be clinically relevant for maxillofacial fracture repair.
