Summary

The triaxial accelerometer for movement registration (Tracmor) accurately estimates walking energy expenditure (EE) in free-living individuals. This device, combined with laboratory calibration, provides reliable data for quantifying physical activity.

  • A subject-specific regression equation was derived to convert Tracmor output to EE.
  • Subjects then walked at self-selected 'slow' and 'fast' velocities in a Room Calorimeter while wearing the Tracmor unit, with EE measured by the calorimeter.
  • Main Results:

    • The Tracmor/regression equation accurately predicted walking-EE, with values of 6.36+/-1.67 kJ/min (slow) and 11.0+/-2.60 kJ/min (fast).
    • Room Calorimeter measurements closely matched predictions: 6.43+/-1.85 kJ/min (slow) and 10.9+/-3.03 kJ/min (fast).
    • High intraclass correlation coefficients (0.93 for slow, 0.82 for fast) indicated strong agreement between predicted and measured EE.

    Conclusions:

    • The Tracmor accelerometer, when calibrated with laboratory measures, provides valuable and applicable data for assessing walking-EE in free-living individuals.
    • This method offers a practical approach to monitoring physical activity and energy expenditure outside of controlled laboratory settings.
    • The findings support the use of Tracmor for research and clinical applications involving the quantification of walking activity.
