This article describes the organization of the National Health Service with respect to the primary and secondary levels of care it offers children. It begins with a personal reflection from 17 years ago that is still relevant to the challenges confronting families in the United Kingdom today. It will discuss the basics of what is different and what is similar when comparing the UK health care system to that of the United States.
