[Urinary sepsis in children and nursing care]
Insights
Pediatric urinary tract infections (UTIs) were studied in hospitalized children. Escherichia coli was the most common pathogen, with fever being the primary symptom observed.
Area of Science:
- Pediatric infectious diseases
- Nephrology
- Public health epidemiology
Context:
- Study conducted at Ciro Redondo General Hospital, Artemisa, Cuba.
- Focus on pediatric hospitalizations during the first quarter of 1990.
- Investigated children admitted with urinary sepsis.
Purpose:
- To identify the incidence of urinary tract infections (UTIs) in hospitalized children.
- To characterize the common pathogens and clinical manifestations of pediatric UTIs.
- To highlight essential nursing care for affected children.
Summary:
- A total of 149 children were admitted; 13 (8.64%) had confirmed UTIs.
- The highest incidence was observed in infants under one year of age.
- Escherichia coli was the predominant causative agent, and fever was the most frequent clinical sign. Vesicoureteric reflux was identified in two cases.
Impact:
- Provides epidemiological data on pediatric UTIs in a specific Cuban population.
- Informs clinical practice regarding the diagnosis and management of infant UTIs.
- Underscores the importance of vigilant nursing care in pediatric sepsis cases.
Abstract:
A study was carried out with children who had been hospitalized due to urinary sepsis at the Ciro Redondo General Hospital in Artemisa, during the first quarter of 1990. Nursing cares are pointed out. Of the 149 children admitted during that period, 13 (8.64%) had urinary infection. The most affected age group was that under 1 year. The germ most often found was Escherichia coli. Vesicoureteric reflux was found in 2 infants and the most common manifestation was fever.
