Phenobarbital (PB) use does not appear to protect against bladder cancer. This study found no association between PB use and reduced bladder cancer risk in the general population.

- A population-based case-control study was conducted in Los Angeles.
- 815 bladder cancer cases and 815 matched controls were interviewed regarding lifetime PB use.
Main Results:
- Ever use of PB showed no association with bladder cancer risk (OR: 0.86; 95% CI: 0.54, 1.39).
- Regular PB use also did not correlate with bladder cancer risk in men, women, smokers, or non-smokers.
- Highest PB consumption was linked to a non-significant increased risk (OR: 2.46; 95% CI: 0.90, 6.78).
Conclusions:
- This study did not find evidence supporting a protective role for phenobarbital (PB) in bladder cancer development.
- The findings do not support the hypothesis that PB use reduces bladder cancer incidence in the general population.
