Summary

Vigorous ocular massage with a device can cause traumatic anterior subcapsular cataract. This case highlights the risks associated with mechanical eye stimulation.

  • Anterior subcapsular cataracts are lens opacities located in the front of the lens capsule.
  • Ocular massage is sometimes used therapeutically, but can carry risks.

Observation:

  • A case of traumatic cataract developed after using a massaging device on the eye.
  • The cataract was specifically anterior subcapsular in location.

Findings:

  • Mechanical stimulation from a massaging device can induce anterior subcapsular cataract.
  • Vigorous ocular massage is a potential cause of iatrogenic eye injury.

Implications:

  • Clinicians should exercise caution when performing or recommending ocular massage.
  • Further research is needed to understand the biomechanics of massage-induced cataract formation.
