Summary

Postoperative complications following general anesthesia remain high, with respiratory infections being the most common. Advances in anesthesia have not significantly reduced these risks in this setting.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To prospectively identify anesthesia-related postoperative complications.
  • To evaluate patient outcomes at the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital.

  • Prospective follow-up of 172 patients (67 male, 105 female) undergoing surgery under general anesthesia.
  • Data collection over a five-day postoperative period, recording clinical progress and anesthesia-related complications.

  • Respiratory tract infection (29.65%) was the most frequent complication, followed by pyrexia (27.91%), nausea/vomiting (23.36%), and sore throat (19.77%).

    • The incidence of post-anesthetic complications has not significantly decreased despite advancements in anesthesia.
    • This highlights the need for continued vigilance and improved management strategies in the local context.
