Gallstones (cholecystolithiasis) and inflammation increase the risk of polypoid gallbladder developing into tumors. This study investigated 260 patients, finding a significant link between gallstones and precancerous gallbladder lesions.

Area of Science:

  • Gastroenterology
  • Pathology
  • Oncology

Background:

  • Polypoid gallbladder (PLG) is a condition affecting the gallbladder lining.
  • Cholelithiasis (gallstones) is a common gallbladder pathology.
  • The relationship between PLG and cholelithiasis requires further investigation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the association between cholecystolithiasis and polypoid gallbladder (PLG).
  • To analyze clinical pathological characteristics of PLG with and without cholecystolithiasis.
  • To identify risk factors for tumor development in PLG.

Main Methods:

  • 260 patients with PLG were divided into two groups: with (Group A) and without (Group B) cholecystolithiasis.
  • Clinical pathological characteristics were analyzed.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Gallbladder mucosa was examined for intestinal metaplasia and atypical hyperplasia under light microscopy.
  • Main Results:

    • Intestinal metaplasia and atypical hyperplasia were observed in 47 of 260 cases.
    • Pathological lesions included gallbladder carcinoma, adenomatosis polyp, myoadenoma, cholesterol polyp, inflammatory polyp, and adenomatosis hyperplasia.
    • These lesions occurred in 44.0% of Group A patients versus 10.3% of Group B patients (P<0.01).

    Conclusions:

    • Cholelithiasis and associated inflammation are significant risk factors for polypoid gallbladder tumor development.
    • Early detection and management of cholecystolithiasis may be crucial in preventing malignant transformation of PLG.
