Summary

A complication of laparoscopic donor nephrectomy (LDN) is ipsilateral orchialgia in male patients. This study found a 9.6% incidence, with unclear etiology but potential nerve injury during dissection. Conservative management is often effective.

Background:

  • Laparoscopic donor nephrectomy (LDN) is a common procedure with generally low complication rates.
  • A previously unreported complication, acute ipsilateral orchialgia, has been observed in male patients post-LDN.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the incidence of ipsilateral orchialgia following laparoscopic donor nephrectomy (LDN).
  • To investigate the potential causes and contributing factors of post-LDN orchialgia.
  • To inform preventive strategies and management approaches for this complication.

  • Retrospective chart review of 381 consecutive LDNs performed between February 1995 and November 2001.

    • Further research is needed to understand the pathophysiology and develop targeted interventions.
