Summary

A pilot program distributing gun safes and trigger locks to Alaska Native households showed high acceptance and use of gun safes, significantly improving firearm storage. Trigger locks had much lower usage rates.

Background:

  • Safe firearm storage practices are crucial for preventing unintentional injuries and suicides.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To develop and evaluate a pilot program aimed at reducing youth access to firearms.
  • To assess the acceptability and effectiveness of distributing gun safes and trigger locks in Alaska Native households.

Main Methods:

  • A pilot intervention utilizing a pre/post-evaluation design was implemented.
  • Two Alaska Native villages participated, with 40 randomly selected households receiving one gun safe and one trigger lock.
  • Home visits were conducted at baseline and three months post-distribution to assess firearm storage and device usage.

Main Results:

  • At baseline, 85% of homes had unlocked firearms.
  • Post-intervention, 86% of distributed gun safes were found locked with firearms inside.
  • Only 30% of distributed trigger locks were found to be in use.
