Summary

Visual prognosis for symptomatic retinal arterial macroaneurysm (RAM) depends on macular pathology. Eyes with vitreous or premacular hemorrhage show good vision recovery, unlike those with submacular hemorrhage.

Area of Science:

  • Ophthalmology
  • Retinal Diseases
  • Vascular Ophthalmology

Background:

  • Retinal arterial macroaneurysm (RAM) is a vascular abnormality.
  • Symptomatic RAM can lead to significant vision impairment.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the visual prognosis in eyes affected by symptomatic retinal arterial macroaneurysm (RAM).

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective review of medical records for 62 patients (65 eyes) diagnosed with symptomatic RAM.
  • Analysis of visual acuity based on the type of macular pathology present.

Main Results:

  • Eyes with vitreous hemorrhage (VH) and premacular hemorrhage (PMH) showed better median final visual acuity (0.6 and 0.7, respectively).
  • Eyes with submacular hemorrhage (SMH), with or without PMH, had poor median final visual acuity (0.1 for both).

Related Experiment Videos

  • Macular edema (ME) associated with RAM resulted in a median final visual acuity of 0.5.
  • Conclusions:

    • Visual prognosis in symptomatic RAM is strongly influenced by the location and type of macular pathology.
    • Good visual recovery is observed in cases of VH and PMH.
    • Submacular hemorrhage significantly impacts long-term visual outcomes, often resulting in poor vision.
    • Future studies should explore novel interventions like submacular surgery for SMH.
