Summary

Proboscis lateralis, a rare congenital anomaly, often involves heminasal aplasia. Reconstruction using the proboscis offers a good aesthetic match and should be preserved, with individualized surgical approaches yielding optimal results.

Area of Science:

  • Plastic Surgery
  • Congenital Anomalies
  • Craniofacial Surgery

Background:

  • Proboscis lateralis is a rare congenital anomaly.
  • Heminaseal aplasia is the most common anomaly associated with proboscis lateralis.
  • The proboscis itself is a valuable tissue for reconstruction due to its color and texture match.

Observation:

  • This study presents a staged reconstruction of two patients with proboscis lateralis and associated heminasal aplasia.
  • A subcutaneous tunnel method was utilized for the reconstruction.
  • The proboscis was preserved and used as the donor tissue for heminose reconstruction.

Findings:

  • The proboscis is an ideal donor structure for heminose reconstruction, offering excellent color and texture match.
  • Staged reconstruction using a subcutaneous tunnel method is a viable surgical approach.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Preservation of the proboscis is crucial for successful reconstruction.
  • Implications:

    • Individualized surgical approaches are essential for optimal reconstruction outcomes in patients with proboscis lateralis.
    • This technique highlights the potential of using the proboscis for aesthetic and functional reconstruction of the nose.
    • Further research into optimizing staged reconstruction techniques for congenital nasal anomalies is warranted.
