Cigarette smoking is associated with a reduced risk of developing Parkinson's disease (PD). This protective effect was observed in current, former, and ever smokers, with longer smoking history showing a stronger inverse association.

Context:

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative disorder with complex etiology.
The role of environmental factors, such as smoking, in PD pathogenesis is under investigation.

Purpose:

To investigate the association between cigarette smoking and the risk of Parkinson's disease (PD).

Summary:

A population-based case-control study involving 114 PD cases and 205 controls found a significantly reduced risk of PD among ever smokers (OR=0.49), current smokers (OR=0.44), and ex-smokers (OR=0.54) compared to never-smokers.
The inverse association was stronger with longer smoking history (>20 years) and pack-day smoking, and persisted even after accounting for alcohol consumption.
Cessation history also showed a protective effect, with longer cessation periods linked to lower PD risk.
