Varicella disciform stromal keratitis, a rare eye condition following chickenpox, can recur in children. Long-term steroid treatment was challenging, and oral acyclovir offered no clear clinical advantage in these cases.

Area of Science:

  • Ophthalmology
  • Virology

Background:

  • Varicella disciform stromal keratitis (VDSK) is an uncommon ocular complication following varicella zoster virus (VZV) infection.
  • It typically manifests weeks to months after the initial varicella (chickenpox) rash.

Observation:

  • This report details four pediatric cases of VDSK.
  • Two of the four children experienced recurrent episodes of the condition.
  • Clinical management involved prolonged topical corticosteroid therapy, which proved difficult to regulate.

Findings:

  • The clinical course in one patient treated with oral acyclovir was not superior to that of other patients managed with topical steroids.
  • Recurrence was observed in half of the pediatric cases presented.

Implications:

Related Experiment Videos

  • The findings suggest that VDSK in children can be recurrent and challenging to manage.
  • Current treatment protocols, including topical steroids and oral acyclovir, may have limitations in altering the disease course or preventing recurrence.
  • Further research into optimal therapeutic strategies for VDSK is warranted.
