Summary

Splenectomized patients with thalassemia show increased platelet aggregation and microthrombi in lung microcirculation. This may contribute to pulmonary dysfunction and hypoxemia in these patients.

Background:

  • Thalassemia is a group of inherited blood disorders.
  • Splenectomy is a common procedure for managing thalassemia complications.
  • Pulmonary dysfunction and hypoxemia are known complications in splenectomized thalassemia patients.

Observation:

  • Lung specimens from autopsy cases of splenectomized thalassemia patients were examined.
  • Microthrombi, primarily composed of platelets, were identified in pulmonary arterioles and microcirculation.

Findings:

  • The presence of microthrombi correlates with increased spontaneous platelet aggregation in whole blood.
  • Platelet-rich microthrombi are a significant finding in the pulmonary vasculature of these patients.
