Area of Science:

  • Gerontology
  • Psychology
  • Sociology

Background:

  • Understanding the aspirations of the elderly is crucial for promoting well-being.
  • Sociodemographic factors significantly influence personal goals in later life.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the nature of personal aspirations among elderly individuals.
  • To identify the relationship between sociodemographic variables and goal profiles in older adults.

Main Methods:

  • Utilized a sentence completion technique with 708 elderly participants (aged 64-90).
  • Classified 15,020 personal aspirations into ten motivational categories.
  • Analyzed the correlation between goal profiles and sociodemographic factors.

Main Results:

  • Two distinct goal profiles were identified: self-preservation and self-development/interpersonal relationships.
  • Self-preservation aspirations correlated with advanced age, functional impairment, lower socioeconomic status (SES), and institutionalization.
  • Self-development and interpersonal aspirations were linked to younger age, physical autonomy, higher SES, and cohabitation.

Conclusions:

  • Personal goals in old age are shaped by age and sociodemographic context.
  • Interventions focusing on developing meaningful personal goals can enhance the lives of elderly individuals.
