Short-term gentamicin treatment in newborns may temporarily affect auditory brainstem responses. These auditory pathway changes, specifically prolonged latencies, resolved by the tenth day of life.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the transient effects of early-life gentamicin prophylaxis on auditory brainstem responses in healthy neonates.
  • To determine the relationship between gentamicin concentration and ABR alterations.

  • Seventeen infants receiving gentamicin prophylaxis were compared to 27 healthy, weight-matched controls.
