Area of Science:

  • Neurology
  • Oncology

Background:

  • Neurologic paraneoplastic syndromes are often debilitating and untreatable manifestations of cancer.
  • Paraneoplastic encephalomyelitis is a rare but severe neurological disorder associated with malignancy.

Observation:

  • A case of severe paraneoplastic encephalomyelitis with predominant cerebellar degeneration was observed.
  • The condition was associated with small cell lung cancer.

Findings:

  • Both the paraneoplastic encephalomyelitis and the small cell lung cancer responded rapidly to cytotoxic chemotherapy alone.
  • The patient remained alive with minor neurologic deficits and no signs of recurrent cancer over 2 years post-diagnosis.

Implications:

  • Aggressive management strategies are recommended for this rare and disabling syndrome.
