Area of Science:

  • Oncology
  • Pathology
  • Skeletal Biology

Background:

  • Small cell carcinoma (SCC) commonly originates in the lungs but can occur in extrathoracic sites.
  • Extrathoracic SCC is rare, and its occurrence in bone has not been previously documented.

Observation:

  • A 60-year-old woman presented with a tumor in the fifth dorsal vertebra.
  • Histopathological examination confirmed the tumor as small cell carcinoma of bone.

Findings:

  • This represents the first reported case of extrapulmonary small cell carcinoma arising from bone.
  • The patient received treatment with local radiotherapy and combination chemotherapy.

Implications:

  • The rarity of extrathoracic SCC of bone necessitates further research into optimal treatment strategies.
