Summary

Perineal sonography is not yet a reliable routine method for evaluating urinary incontinence. Urethrocystography remains essential for accurate diagnosis in most patients.

Area of Science:

  • Urology
  • Medical Imaging

Background:

  • Urinary incontinence diagnosis often requires imaging.
  • Perineal sonography is a potential non-invasive imaging technique.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the applicability of perineal sonography as a routine diagnostic method for urinary incontinence.
  • To compare the results of perineal sonography with urethrocystography.

Main Methods:

  • Perineal sonography and urethrocystography were performed concurrently on 45 patients.
  • Measurements from both imaging modalities were compared.

Main Results:

  • Consistent results between perineal sonography and urethrocystography were obtained in only 30% of patients (14 out of 45).
  • Divergent measurements were observed in 70% of patients (31 out of 45).

Conclusions:

  • Perineal sonography, in its current form, is not sufficiently reliable for routine use in diagnosing urinary incontinence.
  • Urethrocystography remains a crucial and integral part of the diagnostic work-up for urinary incontinence.
