Biochemical correlates of alpha 1-adrenoceptor activation

Abstract:
An impressive body of evidence based on radioligand binding, biochemical, functional and structural data supports the existence of two sub-types of the alpha 1-adrenoceptor (alpha 1a and alpha 1b) in the CNS and in peripheral tissues. Both elevate intracellular Ca2+ concentrations, although by different mechanisms, resulting in a cascade of intracellular events dependent upon the cell type involved.

Adrenergic Receptors: β Subtype
Isoprenaline > Adrenaline > Noradrenaline
Neurotransmitter binding to these receptors causes activation of adenylyl cyclase resulting in increased concentrations of cAMP and modulation of calcium ion channels within the cell. They are further classified into β1, β2, and β3 subtypes.
