Summary

Peripheral neuropathy significantly increases the risk of falls. This study found that patients with peripheral neuropathy (PN) were much more likely to fall than those without, highlighting PN as a key fall risk factor.

  • Peripheral neuropathy (PN) affects nerve function and can impact balance and mobility.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the association between lower extremity peripheral neuropathy and the occurrence of falls.
  • To determine if diagnosed peripheral neuropathy is a risk factor for falls.

Main Methods:

  • A case-control study design was employed.
  • Twenty-five patients with electromyographically confirmed peripheral neuropathy of the lower extremities were compared to 25 age- and sex-matched controls with normal electromyography results.
  • Data on falls, injuries, and risk factors were collected via interviews.

  • Peripheral neuropathy was strongly associated with falling (56% vs 8%, odds ratio 23.0).
  • Repetitive falling was also significantly more common in the peripheral neuropathy group (40% vs 4%).

  • Electromyographically identified peripheral neuropathy is a significant risk factor for falls.
  • Early identification and management of peripheral neuropathy may help prevent falls and related injuries.
